PRESIDENT OF THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION, ON THE COMMENCEMENT OF RUSSIA'S BRICS CHAIRMANSHIP
On January 1, Russia proudly assumed the chairmanship of BRICS, a dynamic alliance that, following the landmark decision made during the 15th BRICS Summit in August 2022, has expanded to encompass ten member nations. The addition of Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates underscores the rising influence and significance of BRICS in the global arena.
BRICS is increasingly attracting a diverse array of supporters and like-minded nations united by shared principles: sovereign equality, respect for individual developmental pathways, mutual consideration of interests, openness, consensus-building, and the pursuit of a multipolar international order. We are committed to fostering a fair global financial and trade system while seeking collective solutions to the pressing challenges of our time.
Under the banner of “Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security,” Russia’s 2024 BRICS Chairmanship will prioritize constructive and positive collaboration with all nations. We will diligently work to ensure that, while honoring our traditions and drawing on the lessons learned throughout the years, we facilitate the seamless integration of new members into all facets of our activities.
We recognize the interest of numerous countries—approximately 30—eager to engage with the BRICS multidimensional agenda. To this end, we will initiate discussions on establishing a new category of BRICS partner country, allowing for broader participation and collaboration.
Russia remains dedicated to advancing the BRICS partnership across three pivotal areas: politics and security, economic and financial cooperation, and cultural and humanitarian exchanges. We will enhance foreign policy coordination among member states and collaboratively seek effective responses to the multifaceted threats facing international and regional security.
Our commitment includes the practical implementation of the Strategy for BRICS Economic Partnership 2025 and the Action Plan for BRICS Innovation Cooperation 2021-2024, aimed at ensuring energy and food security, amplifying BRICS’s role in the international monetary system, enhancing interbank cooperation, and promoting the use of national currencies in mutual trade.
Key priorities for our chairmanship will include fostering collaboration in science, high technology, healthcare, environmental protection, culture, sports, youth exchanges, and civil society initiatives.
Throughout our chairmanship, over 200 diverse events will be hosted across various Russian cities, inviting participation from all nations interested in collaborating with our organization. The BRICS Summit in Kazan this October will serve as the pinnacle of our efforts, gathering leaders and representatives to discuss our shared vision for the future.
As we embark on this significant journey, Russia looks forward to productive partnerships with all countries within the BRICS framework, united in our mission to promote stability, development, and prosperity on a global scale.
